in Copenhagen and a crime was committed. BUT NOT 'OVER
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GREENPEACE INTERNATIONAL - Kumi Naidoo:
Tens of thousands of activists around the world have expressed in recent days because it came out a fair deal from Copenhagen, ambitious and legally binding.
I waited until the last that our leaders would have acted, reaching a climate agreement sufficient to avoid a climate catastrophe.
But the reality was different. Despite the mandate received from citizens around the world, and more than a hundred heads of government come to Copenhagen, the bickering continues. Our leaders have not acted as such. They have completed their task.
The result is not fair, nor ambitious and legally binding. Today, the powerful in the world have failed in order to prevent disastrous climate change.
The city of Copenhagen is the scene of a crime climate, with the culprits who flee to the airport to shame. World leaders have a unique opportunity to change the planet for the better, avoiding climate change. Eventually they produced a weak deal, full of gaps.
But it's over. Citizens around the world asking for a real deal before the summit began, and continue to ask. We can still save hundreds of millions of people from the ravages of a world getting warmer: it's just become much more difficult.
Civil society, most of which was closed off in the final days of this Summit on climate change, must now redouble their efforts. Each of us must force their leaders to act. We must take the fight to prevent climate catastrophe at all political levels: local, regional, national and international levels. And the same for the availability of advice Administration and the main streets of our cities. Or work for a real change in our society or suffer the consequences of this failure.
Three Greenpeace activists entered the Danish Royal Palace, during the official dinner of heads of state, opening up a banner with the demand for real climate action, were sent to prison for three weeks. These are the wrong leaders. The real world leaders who have actually tried to act is now in jail, while the supposed leaders are abandoning the scene.
